Why ChatGPT Barely Recommends Any Local Business, and What Changes That

Skip The Free Movie Box

You have probably seen the ad. A little box plugs into your TV and promises every movie ever made, completely free, no subscription required. Anyone who has spent five minutes online knows the catch before they finish reading the headline. Free access to something that costs real money to produce usually means the source cannot be trusted, and the smart move is to ignore the box entirely.

Business owners are making a version of that same mistake with AI search, except they do not realize it yet.

Most local businesses assume that if they rank well on Google, ChatGPT already knows they exist. That assumption feels reasonable. It is also wrong, and it is wrong in a way that is costing businesses visibility right now without them noticing.

Google built its local results from Google Business Profile data it has collected for years. ChatGPT and Perplexity pull from a different set of sources entirely, leaning on Bing, Yelp, Foursquare, and general web crawls. A business that dominates the local 3-pack on Google can be functionally invisible to ChatGPT because the two systems are not reading from the same page.

Trusting your Google ranking to carry over is the same as trusting the free movie box. The source looks familiar. The promise sounds like something you already earned. But the system on the other end was never built to reward the same signals.

The Numbers Nobody Is Talking About

Here is the part that should worry you more than the algorithm mismatch itself.

Found by AI ran 200 local business queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini in February 2026. Only 8.4% of businesses showed up in any AI response at all. Not just one platform. Any of them.

That number gets worse when you break it down by platform. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index looked at multi-location brands and found ChatGPT recommending just 1.2% of eligible locations. Compare that to Google's local 3-pack, where those same brands showed up 35.9% of the time. Perplexity cited around 7.4% of eligible businesses. Gemini came in at 11%.

Sit with that gap for a second. Google's local pack surfaces roughly a third of qualified businesses for a given search. ChatGPT surfaces one out of every eighty. This is not a slightly smaller pool. It is a different game with different rules and far fewer winners.

Most business owners assume AI search works like search, just with a chat interface bolted on. The data says otherwise. AI assistants are three to thirty times more selective than Google ever was, and being findable on one platform tells you nothing about whether you exist on the others.

Why Your Google Ranking Doesn't Carry Over

Google AI Overviews and Gemini both run on Google Business Profile data. That is the same profile you have been updating for years, the same photos, categories, and posts you have been told matter for local SEO. So if your GBP is dialed in, Google's AI layer already has a head start on knowing who you are.

ChatGPT and Perplexity do not read from that profile at all. They lean on Bing, Yelp, Foursquare, and whatever their crawlers pick up from the open web. A business with a flawless Google Business Profile and zero presence on Yelp can rank at the top of Google's local pack and still never get mentioned by ChatGPT, because ChatGPT was never looking at Google Business Profile in the first place.

This explains why business owners feel like they are doing everything right and still getting skipped. They optimized for one system and assumed the others were reading the same file. They are not. Four different AI platforms, four different primary sources, and a Yelp listing you have not touched since 2021 might matter more to ChatGPT than your entire Google Business Profile does.

Treat each platform as a separate application, not a single AI monolith checking the same homework.

The Four Traits Of Businesses AI Actually Picks

Found by AI did not just measure how often businesses got recommended. They looked at what the winners had in common, and the pattern holds across all five platforms tested.

Trait one is a complete Google Business Profile. Not a claimed listing sitting untouched since 2019. Categories filled in, photos uploaded, posts going up regularly, fifty or more reviews on file.

Trait two is the review numbers themselves. ChatGPT's recommended businesses averaged 4.3 stars. Perplexity sat at 4.1. Gemini came in at 3.9. Drop below roughly 4.0 and you start getting filtered out of consideration entirely, regardless of how many reviews you have.

Trait three is structured data. Ninety-one percent of businesses recommended by multiple AIs in the February study had LocalBusiness schema on their site. That is code in the backend telling AI crawlers exactly what you are, where you are, and what you do, instead of making the model guess from a paragraph of marketing copy.

Trait four is directory spread. Eighty-seven percent of businesses recommended by multiple AIs had complete listings on ten or more directories. Not just Google. Yelp, Foursquare, Bing Places, and whatever else is relevant in your industry.

One of these traits alone will not move you. All four together is what the recommended businesses have in common.
